The Day Sid Caught a Bus

One evening in October 2003, I was out taking Sid for a walk in one of our local fields, which was next to a busy main road.  As usual I let him off the lead and as always Sid would stay near me.  However, this particular night, a firework exploded in the sky, and made me look up and when I looked back down, Sid had vanished.

I began shouting Sid’s name and began to get very anxious on Sid’s whereabouts.  As you can imagine, it was pitch black, and difficult to see in the distance.  I ran up and down the field calling for Sid, but still no sign.  I then rang my wife who came down with family and friends to search for missing Sid.  My wife’s dad stayed at home and rang the police to report Sid missing.  After an hour in the pitch-black field, I was starting to lose hope of finding Sid and feared I would never see him again.

It was then that we got a call on my mobile phone from my wife’s dad who said the police had just had a black Staffordshire handed in.

We immediately drove to Wakefield city centre police station, which was several miles from where we lived.  When we arrived the Police officer took us to the dog kennels round the back of the station and opened the door, and there was Sid giddy as ever jumping all over me.  We were delighted and relieved that we had got Sid back.

When we went back into the station, we asked the Officer who had handed him in and the story as we know it is that Sid had managed to cross the busy main road and got on a bus, which went into Wakefield City Centre.  The bus driver tried to get him off half way, but Sid “grumbled” which put the driver off.  Sid was then taken to the bus station where he had enjoyed being fussed and spoilt with treats.  Afterwards the bus depot staff handed him into the police.

All in all a happy ending for Sid and his owners.
