this is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier
by

Hardcover: 192 pages
Publisher: TFH Publications (May 1983)
Language: English

Although the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has been known in the United States for a considerable number of years, having been bred by a number of loyal fanciers and shown upon occasion in the Miscellaneous Classes at dog shows, it is only about a decade since the breed’s official entry into the American Kennel Club Stud Book and its own classification at shows.

There is a lively interest in the breed, which seems to have a steady attraction for new fanciers. Staffs are unique in appearance and a nice size for city or country living. They are extremely affectionate and, contrary to what you may have heard, are amicable toward other dogs. They are easy to live with and their short coats preclude the necessity for extensive grooming. Yet the Staff possesses all the gameness of spirit for which terriers are loved. He is a capable watch dog, alert and dependable, as well as a fun dog to have around.

Along with the rise in admirers, there is a thirst for information about the breed. We hope that this book, which T.F.H. is bringing you from England with the addition of a United States section and full color photographs, will serve its purpose in helping you to know, enjoy, and appreciate the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

INTRODUCTION
The main factor that prompted me to write this book was the opportunity to combine two of my principal hobbies: the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and writing.

Since we acquired our first Stafford in 1948, my wile and I have increasingly admired both the physical and mental characteristics of the breed, which we believe to be superior to those of any other breed of dog. During the past thirty years there has been a tremendous increase in the popularity of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier as more people have become aware of the pleasures of owning specimens of the breed.

Although a considerable number of owners exhibit their Staffords — and undoubtedly the show-ring is a prerequisite for the continuing popularity of any breed of dog — there are many owners who, for a variety of reasons, are not so interested in showing their dogs. Nevertheless, they may have an important contribution to make to the future of this breed, and many are interested in obtaining as much information as possible in order to be better informed about their hobby.

This book has been designed, therefore, to be of interest to a wide range of Stafford owners, from beginners in the breed to experienced breeders and exhibitors. it is hoped that the contents may also prove of value to owners of other breeds of dogs, especially other sporting breeds, who are not yet fully conversant with the peculiarities and propensities of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
From its beginnings as a sporting terrier used in bull baiting and organised dog fighting, the Stafford is one of the few breeds of dog that has been able to retain its ‘naturalness’. Not for him the intricate trimming, the scented shampoos or the coat ribbons; he is in his element in any outdoor environment where his sporting instincts can be enjoyed by him and his owner alike. He is also equally satisfied lying in front of an appealing coal fire!
