"Over the last thirty years I have observed with enthusiasm and no little pride the Staffordshire Bull Terrier's rise from his humble beginnings as a show dog to the successful bencher he is today. At one time among the least admired breeds - although no fault of his own, but due to his gladiatorial background from which he had barely emerged when the twentieth century began - he is now one of dogdom's most popular Terriers. He can claim to be a breed to be reckoned with, not only outside the show ring but firmly within it. In recent months, a Staffordshire, Champion Wystaff Warfare, was made Best in Show All Breeds at the Leicester Abbey Park Championship Show - a rare accolade indeed, bit certainly the forerunner of others which will grace the breed's future.
Such a book as this cannot be produced without the help of others - even the Staffords themselves by virtue of their successful campaigning in the show world have created a demand for more literature to further their interests! My thanks to them, also to Arthur Hill ('Kinderlee') for his valuable help in compiling the list of champions and to Glan Williams for his lucid diagrams, not forgetting those who so kindly sent me pictures of their excellent dogs.

"Arrangements having been made to reprint this book, it is only fitting that the list of champions (Appendix C) should be ex-tended to the date when the second edition goes to press. This has been done, and one or two small alterations and amendments which have been brought to my notice have received attention.
This now seems an admirable opportunity to thank the many breed enthusiasts who have written to me since the first edition was published to express their appreciation for what they have generally and kindly termed my 'best book' on the breed. 1972 JFG”
------------------
It is gratifying to learn that a third edition of my book has been arranged. It has not proved necessary to alter the text, but amendments and alterations have been made to the Appendices, with additions to the list of champions bringing this up to date.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are, according to the Kennel Club 1974 list of annual registrations, the third most popular Terrier breed in the United Kingdom. What progress has been made! What a far cry from the pitiful figures of 1935 and the early post-war years when the breed was getting itself known and established. Now we can claim its emancipation and be proud of the way the Stafford has endeared itself to the public, not only here but throughout the world, and especially in the United States of America where it is becoming an important breed. 1975 JFG
------------------
Since the third edition appeared in 1975 there have been some changes in the fees and pattern of registration at the Kennel Club; the names and addresses of some club secretaries have altered and Appendices A and C, which refer to registration totals and champions, have been extended.
Naturally, I am pleased to have achieved a fourth edition and take this opportunity of thanking the many Staffordshire Bull Terrier enthusiasts who have written me or conveyed in some form their appreciation of this book on their chosen breed. 1977 JFG
------------------
I have been asked to contribute a brief author's note to this fifth edition of my book. What can I say but express delight that my book has gone to every corner of the earth where there exists an interest in our wonderful breed. It is indeed very fitting that the book's continuing success is being marked in 1980, the year in which the breed's own success is marked by achieving top Terrier entry at Cruft's. The reader will find the list of champions and appendices up-dated in the usual way and I hope new readers will enjoy my book as others appear to have done. 1980 JFG
------------------
Staffordshire Bull Terriers have progressed in numbers and quality to an almost unbelievable extent over the last few years. We are currently involved with a pedigree breed which has set its indelible mark on dogdom. The Stafford's great worth as a useful and formidable guard to home and property in these somewhat troubled social times has not gone unnoticed by the general public, resulting in the dog's general appeal going far beyond the exhibition ring.
This is the sixth edition of my book, brought up to date with the changing fees and list of champions and other small items. My thanks to the many readers and breed concerns who have expressed their appreciation for the book's usefulness and guidance. 1983 Romford, Essex JFG
------------------
The continued success of this book can only confirm that many more fanciers are becoming involved with Staffordshire Bull Terriers and experiencing, no doubt, the delight, reward and even surprise which this breed is able to bestow upon the intelligent and understanding owner. May such progress long continue - the breed deserves it. 1984 JFG
------------------
Now we are into the eighth edition and again, with up-datings in various parts of the text, the book is going to all parts of the world and must surely be encouraging the expansion of love for our wonderful breed. My appreciation to the innumerable fanciers who have sent their congratulations and best wishes. 1986 Romford, Essex JFG
