Staffordshire bull terriers are game all-rounders, with a loyal following. First appearing in the Staffordshire Black Country in the 19th century, they were originally bred for bloodsports such as bull-baiting and dog-fighting, but their tenacious courage in these pursuits was tempered by their responsiveness to their owners. It is this combination of intelligence with courage which is the hallmark of the best of today's Staffords.
The history of the breed, which forms almost half of this book, is bound up with England's Industrial Revolution and the hard life led by the Midlands working population; in such circumstances, a game dog could make the reputation of his owner in the restricted social climate which prevailed.
Combining bulldog and terrier characteristics, the Staffordshire bull terrier became a local success story. There are a number of representations of them dating from the second half of the 19th century, several of which appear in the pages of this book, but it was only in 1935 that the breed achieved Kennel Club recognition and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club was formed.
An account of the evolution of the breed standard ends with MARY PRINGLE's comments on the standard as revised in 1987 (six pages of line drawings illustrate important features in the breed standard), and a discussion of breeding includes an important section on line breeding by NORMAN BERRY. Advice on choosing and living with a Stafford takes into account its special requirements, and includes tips related to training, care and feeding, and show technique. The author draws on his wide experience of the breed to consider its development world-wide and its international future.
DIETER FLEIG is well-known to Stafford fanciers; he has been instrumental in establishing the breed in his native Germany, where he and his wife breed Staffords and where he runs a publishing house, Kynos Verlag, specialising in books about dogs, their training, care and welfare.
