"THE FIRST 100-ODD YEARS of this breed's existence, was the least-admired of all canine breeds. Used in clandestine dog fighting circles of bygone days, it was tagged with the blackest of reputations; as such, very few 'respectable' people wished association with it.
TO-DAY the pure-bred descendants of that ancient bloodline are the most DYNAMIC and EXCITING of modern canines....... sought after by discerning dog lovers from all levels of society.
THEIR GROWTH for the future must not destroy its past, for a breed with no past, has no future.
IN THIS BOOK are many illustrations of the breed's past, and present. In the text are notes on origins and background history. Hopefully, sound breeding judgment and appraisal will preserve some of this history for future Fanciers - who will surely appreciate this 'legacy'.
Since 1935, when Staffordshire Bull Terriers first became eligible for exhibiting at officially recognized shows, this breed has grown from a tiny minority in those early days, to its present-day level, well-up amidst the most sought-after of modern canine breeds ...... all within a brief time-span of less than 40 years!.
Following in the train of popularity comes the newcomer/novice to the breed, who, upon realizing there is more to a Staffordshire than its 'pretty face', wishes to become more educated about his new acquisition. In an old breed such as this, one may wish to know how these dogs were developed into their present form, and from whence they derived their wonderful temperament and character.
Within these pages will be found a vast and comprehensive range of photographic material, together with notes, articles and anecdotes, all of which will indeed contribute to a furthering of one's education on these superb dogs.
'MEMORIES' ....of Staffordshire Bull Terriers.... is about this old breed in modern times. Herein is an outline of its origins and history which began almost 200 years ago.... a chronicle from past to present.
Being an owner of Staffordshires myself, and having been in contact with many different people in other countries where this breed is becoming established aside from its rapidly expanding growth here in England, I have felt that a book such as this was needed, from which the many newcomers to the breed could study and learn quickly with the aid of numerous pictures, illustrations and informative articles.
To present a comprehensive view-point, I invited prominent/distinguished breed personalties of international renown to submit data of interest to accompany my own herein. Thanks to a most generous response, I am enabled to present on the following pages what must surely be the largest, most comprehensive collection of photographs ever compiled of these dogs, under one cover, and made available to the enthusiast.”
