“PREFACE

In writing this little book, I have aimed to give a reasonably compete survey of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, not covering him with frills and furbelows nor making him out to be the dog of dogs.  To most of those who own a Staffordshire, and to myself, there is nothing to equal him in the canine world, but we have found this out for ourselves by virtue of owning him.

I do not suggest that the Staffordshire is the ideal dog for all and sundry and let me state quite definitely that in my opinion it will be a sorry day for the breed should it ever achieve the excessive popularity of the dogs who have suffered extensive commercialism and an undoubted ruination of correct type and temperament.  There are some people who understand nothing of dogs, having neither the patience nor the will to train them, and who are not appreciative of a courageous dog.  To these, I suggest they leave the Staffordshire alone, and go get a pretty lap-dog, for here is a grand breed which must be treated with humour and tolerance.

Since my initiation into the breed, I have possessed an abiding interest in the origin and history of the Staffordshire, and am aware of his hard-living background and gladiatorial past.  This has hindered his progress in some directions, but has in the main moulded his character, his courage and adaptability to fulfil what he is to-day – the foremost all-purpose dog who is a dog.

I am indebted to those friends who have aided me with photographic material, much of which has never been published before.  This book has been published under the editorship of Clifford L. B. Hubbard, Esq., to whom I extend my thanks for his kind assistance and guidance.

“The Dog Lover’s Library

The British have long held pride of place as a dog-owning nation, and recent years have seen an ever increasing sense of responsibility among pedigree dog owners.  This has in turn heightened the demand for a more intimate knowledge, not only of dogs in general but of the particular breeds, thus creating a real need for the more specialized information on this subject so close to the heart of the dog lover.

This series is designed specially to meet this need for detailed and accurate information on specific breeds.  It includes therefore, not only essential information on dog management and care, sections devoted to the breeding and rearing of each breed, and a comprehensive treatment of dog showing, but an altogether more accurate and fuller history of each breed featured.  The series in intended, moreover, to embrace not only the already popular breeds – for popularity can prove fickle indeed – but thos promising breeds which play their parts in the history of the dog yet until now have not enjoyed a literature of their own.

“NOTE TO SECOND EDITION

Over ten years have passed since the manuscript for the first edition of this book was completed.  It is now the beginning of 1961, and much has happened in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier world during the interim period.  So many enthusiasts have requested an up-to-date history that it seems appropriate therefore to not only to cater for their needs, but to present modern charts of the Lines for reference.  To my own records have been added modern data supplied by Mr C A Smith, to whom I am indebted for his co-operation.  In the case of the powerful and extensive M-Line which I have been obliged to adjust in form to meet technical requirements in publication I would ask forbearance by the student of the chart.  It was a case I fear, of having it presented in this way, or not at all!  Readers will find the sections on the Standard and Breeding have received some amplification, and extra art plates have been added, mostly of noted dogs and bitches, some in traditional vein.

To the Kennel Club, to several secretaries of the breed clubs and some prominent members of these bodies I record my thanks and appreciation for their help.
