Book Description:

During the early nineteenth century, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was bred for the purposes of bull- and bear-baiting. Agile, quick and fearless, he quickly established his reputation for tenacity and courage and was highly prized for his fighting skills. While still retaining the essential character that originally made him famous, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of today is trainable, affectionate and popular as a family pet and loyal companion.

In this book, the authors first detail the history of the breed before going on to discuss conformation, characteristics and the British and American Breed Standards. There are chapters on breeding, showing and judging and advice on the nutrition, training and general care of your dog. There is also advice on buying and rearing young puppies and a very useful section on diseases, ailments and first aid.

Well illustrated with black and white photographs and line-drawings, this complete guide to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier will be of interest not only to the new owner but also to experienced breeders and enthusiasts.

Preface:

"Many fine books have been written about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and our aim is not to repeat breed history competently covered by others. Rather, we have set out to discover the dog itself and perhaps in so doing will provide a better understanding of the breed by owners, breeders and judges.

We are quite aware of our shortcomings, preferences and beliefs concerning the breed and expect disagreement with some of our views and findings, but if this book does nothing more than induce genuine interest, study and thought-provoking discussion, we will have achieved our purpose and will, indeed, be well satisfied.

About the Authors:

Vic Pounds has kept, shown and bred Staffordshire Bull Terriers since 1948. He has enjoyed considerable success in the show ring and has judged at all types of show, including Championship level, both in the UK and the USA. He was instrumental in establishing the first organized rescue scheme for the breed, which now has representatives all over Britain. He has regularly contributed articles to The Stafford magazine.

Lilian Rant imported the first American Kennel Club recognized Staffordshire Bull Terrier Champion (Ch. Tinkinswood Imperial) into the USA. Her Silverlake prefix became synonymous with superior quality in the breed and she is now a leading breeder and exhibitor in California where she has gained recognition for her contribution to the breed's success and popularity. She has written various articles for the  American Stafford Club magazine.
