Our first Staffy was a red dog called “Dollar” who we had for 13 great years. Dollar was a robust strong dog who loved people. Soon after Dollar passed on, along came Dime. He was a tiny little black pup with the clearest blackest eyes I had ever seen. The name ”Dime” was a bit unusual for a Staffy but seemed to suit him, and as he grew older it suited him even more. He was loved and he gave out love. He was the gentlest character who would never hurt a living thing, apart from me if I tried to cuddle him. I think it was a male macho thing. He would love when my wife or daughter cuddled him, but not me, up to the last 10 minutes of his life when he relented and let me hold him close until he went to sleep. These were some of the best, and worst, minutes of my life. As I stroked his coat for the last time before leaving him I thought, “there will be a new bright little star in the sky tonight.”
